PC upgrade
I Went to Montgallet last Saturday (a Parisian equivalent to Akihabara in Tokyo), to complete the dream machine of mine; 2 Samsung Spinpoint F1-3D hard drives of 1 Tb (yes, that's one TERA-BYTE, one trillion bytes, makes my head spin), 2 Kingston 1 Gb modules (DDR2 5300, I could have get better) and a Corsair 520W Modular power supply. With the existing hardware we have:

- Motherboard: Asus P5K-E
- CPU: Intel Core2quad Q6600 (2.4Ghz)
- CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12P (a real monster, there's just enough space to close the case)
- RAM: 4 Gb DDR2-5300 Crucial/Kingston
- Video Card: Asus EN8500GT Silent, 512 Mb RAM
- Storage: 2 x 1 Tb in RAID1
- Monitor 24'' Wide Samsung

A somewhat mixed new-and-old configuration: I still have aged components, like a Logitech QuickCam webcam (about 5 years old), a BTTV card wich I don't use anymore, coz' no antenna (about 10 years old), and my loyal Kenitec keyboard (102 keys, yes, indeed), about 15 years old. Plus the tower case and the DVD burner, unknown age and manufacturer.

All is running, of course, on Gentoo Linux 2008.0 64bits :)

Note for the scatterbrains who forget to buy additional SATA cables and do not have enough to make a proper RAID1 configuration: the trick is to copy the data on the first disk (without RAID at all), then plug the second disk, make a degrated RAID1 on it, then copy the data. It is explained there, it is in French and for RISC, but it can be easily adapted for x86.

A new beginning
I Left my first job in Paris last thursday, and it seems like an eternity to me. I will began working in the next...tomorrow, still in Paris.

Tonight I feel like in the day before the beginning of term, like these sunday evenings when you miss the too-fast week-end...and what is worst, I feel LONELY. Stranges feelings, which are not, or not anymore, in my habits.

Tomorrow is now both my fear and hope. I will get to sleep early...to wake up early.

By the way, here are some small updates : Chuck Norris facts in fortune cookies (only in French), a new "friends" box in the menu, and the return of Munin graphs in the stats part of the site.

GMail is nice...for backups
GMail has at last opened IMAP access...so bye to their shitty webmail, and now I have a real solution for e-mails backups, using imapsync.

After a brief diving in "Perl's hell" (a.k.a. CPAN), compilation of 50 000 dependencies ending with an aborted test, I then installed the missing libraries (mostly SSL) using the FreeBSD ports tree. A few minutes later, all was running...Perl is nice, but CPAN really needs to get improved (or maybe I need to get used to it...maybe).

First import is pretty long, but imapsync will allow me to have a daily backup outside my network, hosted at my beloved friend Google's servers. Along with another daily backup on my PC (in RAID1), I really won't have any excuses to lose my e-mails :)
