I Went to Montgallet last Saturday (a Parisian equivalent to Akihabara in Tokyo), to complete the dream machine of mine; 2 Samsung Spinpoint F1-3D hard drives of 1 Tb (yes, that's one TERA-BYTE, one trillion bytes, makes my head spin), 2 Kingston 1 Gb modules (DDR2 5300, I could have get better) and a Corsair 520W Modular power supply. With the existing hardware we have:
- Motherboard: Asus P5K-E - CPU: Intel Core2quad Q6600 (2.4Ghz) - CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-U12P (a real monster, there's just enough space to close the case) - RAM: 4 Gb DDR2-5300 Crucial/Kingston - Video Card: Asus EN8500GT Silent, 512 Mb RAM - Storage: 2 x 1 Tb in RAID1 - Monitor 24'' Wide Samsung
A somewhat mixed new-and-old configuration: I still have aged components, like a Logitech QuickCam webcam (about 5 years old), a BTTV card wich I don't use anymore, coz' no antenna (about 10 years old), and my loyal Kenitec keyboard (102 keys, yes, indeed), about 15 years old. Plus the tower case and the DVD burner, unknown age and manufacturer.
All is running, of course, on Gentoo Linux 2008.0 64bits
Note for the scatterbrains who forget to buy additional SATA cables and do not have enough to make a proper RAID1 configuration: the trick is to copy the data on the first disk (without RAID at all), then plug the second disk, make a degrated RAID1 on it, then copy the data. It is explained there, it is in French and for RISC, but it can be easily adapted for x86.
